Viththagan Review

Actor-director R Parthiepan is back with 'Vithagan'. Written, directed and enacted by him, the film features him in the role of a tough cop fighting criminals.

Parthiepan lives up to his reputation with razor-sharp dialogues and racy sequence of events laced with humour, albeit a lengthy and slow second half.

The movie promises aplenty as it begins and the surprise twists and turn of events add more strength. The pace should have been maintained till the end to make the show a complete success.

Rowthiran (Parthiepan) is an honest Assistant Commissioner of Police who weeds out criminals. More brainy than brawny, Rowthiran's mission wins him the admiration of all.

When he bumps off a criminal, who is also an influential man in the society, Mary (Poorna) becomes a witness to it. But soon she comes to know of Rowthiran's intentions behind these acts and falls for him.

Rowthiran has a bad past too. Born to an honest police officer, he had to lose his family because of the police department and anti-socials. He turns Rowthiran only to achieve what his father dreamt to.

Cut to the present, Rowthiran has a special reason to bump off a nefarious gangster (Milind Soman). With Mary around, Rowthiran's mission does suffer some stumbling blocks.

We have seen a fun-loving and bubbly cop enacted by Parthiban in 'Ulle Veliyae'. In total contrast is Rowthiran in 'Vithagan'. Parthiban gets his act well as Assistant Commissioner of Police. He brings out the variation between a cop and a criminal with his performance.

Poorna as bubbly call centre employee falling for Rowthiran does give a cute act. She plays her part well. Milind Soman oozes venom in his eyes. With apt dubbing by Gautham Vasudev Menon, his role leaves an impact. The movie boasts of a huge star cast and everyone have a part to play.

Joshua Sridhar's music is peppy and a song featuring Parthiepan's son Rakki is good. Cinematography is worth mentioning in stunt sequences. So is editing by Antony.

The dialogues in any Parthiepan's film hold the audience in their seats. 'Vithagan' is no different. The encounter between Parthiepan and his superior officer is interesting.

On the whole, 'Vithagan' promises a different fare. However, cliched violence and needless gore in the second half mars the show.
