The long and enduring struggle for freedom of our country popularised several freedom fighters who are remembered for their devotion to the country. However, there are many who got little to no recognition even after giving their all. Durgavati Devi, who aided Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad is their exploits, belongs to the latter category.
Now filmmaker Vishnu Vardhan Induri has decided to produce a film on Durgavati Devi. He is known for bankrolling films like '83', and Kangana Ranaut's 'Thalaivi'. The film titled 'Veerangana Durgavati Devi' will be the first installment of the 'Aazad Hind' franchise which will produce a movies about freedom fighters every year.
Durga Bhabhi, as she was called by fellow revolutionaries, was the same woman who posed as Bhagat Singh's wife and helped him escape after the assassination of policeman John Saunders. Her character was briefly explored by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in 'Rang De Basanti' where she was played by Soha Ali Khan.
