Vishal, a prominent actor and producer in the Tamil film industry, commonly known as Kollywood, has found himself at the center of a controversy regarding alleged misuse of funds from the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC). The TFPC, for which Vishal served as President from 2017 to 2019, has accused him of misappropriating a substantial amount of money, leading to significant financial loss for the organization.
The TFPC claims that approximately Rs 12 crores were misused under Vishal's tenure, resulting in a considerable loss. This sum includes Rs 7.5 crores from the council's bank deposits and Rs 5 crores from the income and expenditure during his presidency from 2017 to 2019. Despite repeated requests for Vishal to address and rectify these issues, no action has been taken by him.
The TFPC has taken proactive steps to address the situation, asking producers and technicians who plan to work with Vishal to consult with the council before proceeding with any new films. This move is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability within the industry.
In response to the allegations, Vishal has strongly countered the claims on his official X (previously Twitter) account, asserting that the decisions regarding the use of funds were collective and included individuals such as "Mr. Kathiresan" from the TFPC team. He further explains that the funds were utilized for welfare works, benefiting the older and struggling members of the producers council. These works included providing education, medical insurance, and basic welfare during festivals, which supported the council members and their families.
Vishal also highlights the need for the industry to address pressing issues such as double taxation, theater maintenance charges, and other challenges. He remains undeterred, stating that he will continue to make films and that attempts by certain producers to halt his career will not succeed.
Vishal was last seen in the 2024 film Rathnam, directed by Singam fame Hari. The film is an action-packed narrative centered around a righteous MLA’s henchman known as Rathnam, showcasing Vishal's continued presence in the Tamil cinema scene.
The controversy involving Vishal and the TFPC underscores the complexities and challenges within the film industry, particularly concerning financial management and governance. It also highlights the role of industry bodies in maintaining standards and addressing issues that impact the broader community. Vishal's response and his commitment to continuing his career in films indicate that the matter may not be resolved quickly, potentially leading to further developments within the Tamil film industry.
