Virat Kohli to soon leave ODI captaincy too? Ravi Shastri answers

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as captain of the T20I format even before the beginning of the recently concluded T20 World Cup. While he is certain of leading the team in the red ball format, he may relinquish his ODI captaincy soon enough too.

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri reportedly informed a news agency, “The same might happen with the ODI. He might say he wants to focus just on Test captaincy. It is his mind and body that will make that decision. He won’t be the first, there are many players in the past who have had very successful tenures and captains and then given it up to focus on batting.”

He added, “In red ball cricket, India has been the No1 team in the world for the last 5 years under Virat Kohli. So unless he wants to give up or if he is mentally fatigued and says he wants to focus on his batting - which can happen in the near future, don't think it will happen immediately - it can happen.”

Explaining the reason behind his decision to quit captaincy in the shortest format, Virat Kohli had earlier said, There were two things. The main factor was workload, and then I did not want to be dishonest towards my responsibilities. If I am unable to give 120 percent towards my responsibilities, then I would rather leave it. I have never been the kind of person who will just hold on to things for the sake of it. I am the kind of person who is not attached to anything.”
