Blowing the trumpet

The songs of 'VIP-2' are modeled around the various themes of its protagonist, Raghuvaran (Dhanush).  Anantha Sriram and Chandra Bose have penned two numbers each.  Rahul Nambiar, Sean Roldan, MM Manasi, Ravi G, KG Ranjith and Ananya Thirumalai are the singing talent on board.

Life of Raghuvaran - Nada Ra Raja

Singer: Rahul Nambiar
Lyricist: Anantha Sriram

At the end of the day, the song is a hero-oriented one, albeit with a creative tweaking.  Some rock-solid guitar works and drumming helps to get the tone of the song going and Rahul Nambiar is vividly at ease.  The track also lays foundation for VIP2 theme on a rapid electrical note.

Anantha Sriram goes for such phrases as 'Gelichi porada ra' so as to ensure the song will be called Raghuvaran's anthem.

Angel of Raghuvaran - Iruvuram Kaadu

Singer: Sean Roldan, MM Manasi
Lyricist: Anantha Sriram

If you don't see the great Maestro Ilaiyaraja all through the number, you have none but yourself to blame.  Sean Roldan's vocals are eminently husky, perhaps, on purpose.  MM Manasi is such a treat to listen to.  Her mellifluous vocals do the duet a huge favour.

The flute takes us back to the retro days. The chorus end is truly the highlight showcasing Sean’s strength.

Torture of Raghuvaran - Pellanade

Singer: Ravi G
Lyricist: Chandra Bose

Those with awareness about Dhanush's style are more likely to see a pattern in this song.  Heavy Kollywood-esque flavour aside, Chandra Bose's lyrics lend themselves to funny visualization.  Ravi G throws away the rules to give his best shot at irreverence.

The Brass work along with the classical Nadaswaram is an interesting touch from Sean as he spices up the energy of the track well.  'Torture of Raghuvaran' is definitely not the best, but not the worst either.

Raghuvaran Vs Vasundhara - Dhooram Nuvve Undalo

Singers: KG Ranjith, Ananya Thirumalai
Lyricist: Chandra Bose

The song pits the two titans against each other.  Raghuvaran and Vasundhara tell the world, loud and clear, that they are 'Ek se badkar ek', all constraints be damned.  He is a self-confessed victor, while she is that man-rejecting Maharani.

The rock like style coated track has Ranjith and Ananya helming the vocals with some heavy guitar works behind the tunes. Immense use of strings from Sean to drive the climax of their feud is a good move making it a good listen.

Vasundhara - The Empress Arrives (Only music)

Probably an entry song for Kajol has been dealt royally indeed, those string setups, pitches all look tailor made for a grand visual. The appealing factor of the tune is certainly the string orchestration, gets going to build a corporate villain looming over. The touch is refreshing, Sean has built the tension well on a rough note. Jaigopi has delivered the trumpets, while the strings are by Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra.

Verdict:  Sean Roldan's music breaks a few rules.  The influence of Dhanush is vivid in the songs' concepts (and he has even written and rendered a couple of songs in the original).  If you have a mood for the peppy, don't miss this album.
