The Black Lives Matter protests in the US have seen the participation of countless number of well-meaning people. Most of them are genuine and are victims of racism. But it is also true that the protests have been hijacked by violent mobs, which have been resorting to arson, mindless looting and worse.

Is India in for something on similar lines later this year? As per some, there are going to be violent agitations in August. BJP MP Subramanian Swamy today tweeted, "I have already conveyed to Defence Minister Rajnath Singhji that in August, we should expect internal traitors and externally hostile neighbours' co-ordinated agitation in India."

This comes days after Sunday Guardian published an article stating that India should expect wide-spread protests, violent or otherwise, in August.

Why are some talking of protests? They feel macro conditions are now ripe for America-type arson and agitations.

Columnist and senior journalist MD Nalapat says that the class divide in India has widened in the wake of Covid-19, with millions having been pushed into poverty due to the lockdown. Intelligence and police departments in the country may or may not be aware of what this simmering discontent might manifest itself as.

There is also this view that China and Pakistan are itching to create social unrest in India so that the Modi government is troubled deeply. NGOs doing their bidding will do the needful, as they did during the Shaheen Bagh protests in Delhi earlier this year.

Note that the government may actually be equipped with intelligence and deterrent strategies already. If it is unprepared, it will reflect badly on Home Minister Amit Shah's calibre.

It's also true that Subramanian Swamy has been known for making loose comments. He is also a conspiracy theorist. Rest, only time will tell!
