Captain Vijayakanth had been known for his straight forward talks and bold attitude even in the presence of former Chief minister Jayalalitha in the assembly. For the past few years, the leader of DMDK had been facing serious health issues, and during the times of 2014 election, he underwent treatment in Singapore's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

After the elections, his health further deteriorated, and after treatment for some days in Chennai, again he went to Singapore, and he had been alternating between treatments in Chennai and Singapore. He had went to USA in December 2018, and has been undergoing treatment for more than 2 months.

Vijayakanth has been voicing out for issues happening in Tamil Nadu from US, and has been updating his photos and videos at regular intervals.After his son Shanmuga Pandian's interview that Vijayakanth will be reaching Chennai soon, now the official announcement on the same has been made by DMDK party, and the leader will be returning to Chennai this Saturday(February 16).
