Suriya and his family are known for their philanthropic activities especially their Agaram Foundation that has given quality education to thousands of underprivileged students. Suriya's wife Jyothika in a recent awards function stated that when shooting in Thanjavur for a film at a government hospital she found the facilities pathetic and wished that the people and the government should treat schools and hospitals on par with the ancient Brigadeshwar Temple in the city and divert funds to that.

Jyothika's statement was heavily criticized by religious groups who took it as an attack on one religion and that the actress should have also mentioned churches and mosques if she was being social minded. Suriya released a detailed statement in which he stated that he backed his wife to the hilt and that he and his family would continue to place humanity over religion and that hospitals and schools should be treated on par with religious places as said by ancient philosophers and leaders including Swami Vivekananda and Thirumoolar.

Vijay Sethupathi has taken to twitter to give a big welcome to Suriya's stand on the issue by writing just one-word "Sirappu" as a caption to the image of the statement. The Makkal Selvan's backing of his industry colleagues has been well received by fans of both the stars.
