The ruling DMK has won the rural local body elections with its arch rival AIADMK in second place. The rest of the state level parties and comparitvely new ones such as Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi and Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam have received very little support from the people.
The dark horse in this elections is undoubtedly the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam comprising of fans of Thalapathy Vijay who battled it out against the older and bigger parties independently. We have already reported that Bussy Anand, the leader of the All India VMI, said yesterday that 169 members contested the elections and as of Tuesday evening 51 emerged as winners.
In todays counting it has come to light that out of the 169, a considerable number of 110 candidates have won and are set to become councilors in their wards.
Following this result, the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has raced to the third place after the bigwigs DMK and AIADMK. The upset win is sure going to make Thalapathy Vijay and his fans a hot subject of debate in the coming days.
