Thalapathy Vijay was last seen on screens in the Diwali 2018 release Sarkar, the political entertainer directed by AR Murugadoss, that had him playing a stylish and suave Sundar Ramasamy who is forced to venture into politics, and the movie had humongous collections becoming one of the best openers of the actor.

After Sarkar, Vijay had signed to join hands for the third time with Atlee, after their previous blockbuster movies like the cop flick Theri and the triple action entertainer Mersal, and this movie bankrolled by AGS will have AR Rahman composing music for Vijay, the third time in a row after Sarkar and Mersal.

While the film was announced officially a month ago, now the next official update from the team is out. Thalapathy 63, as the project is tentatively called, will begin shooting from January 20. The movie has lady Superstar Nayanthara pairing with Vijay after Villu, and has been announced to be a Diwali release. The movie is touted to be a sports flick with Vijay playing a football coach reportedly.
