Director Vignesh Shivan had last directed the 2018 movie Thaanaa Serndha Koottam starring Suriya and Keerthy Suresh, and was supposed to direct a movie starring Siva Karthikeyan for Lyca productions.

However there was a major change, and the director's next movie was announced earlier this year. It was announced on valentine's day that Vignesh Shivan's next is Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal starring Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara and Samantha.

While the movie was announced in February, the shooting was postponed due to the pandemic and the latest buzz is that the shooting of Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kadhal will be starting in December last week and the team is making preparations for the same. Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal is produced jointly by Lalit Kumar's Seven Screen Studio and Vignesh Shivan's Rowdy Pictures.
