'Moondram Pirai' directed by Balu Mahendra is considered to be a rare jewel in the Tamil romance genre.  The film which released in 1982 had Kamal Hassan and Sridevi in the lead roles. The film earned Kamla Hassan a National Award for acting and to Balu Mahendra for cinematography.

In line of many wonderful yesteryear films remade in a contemporary setting, the Hindi version of ‘Moondram Pirai’ titled ‘Sadma’ was also touted to be remade. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan who is known for her bold roles was approached to enact Sridevi’s character in the film.

However, the actress has refused to act in a remake movie. Vidya Balan quoted that she refused to play the part in the remake as she thought that the movie was eternal and no one should discolour its essence by making a remake. Claiming that eventhough the movie could be reinterpreted differently, she was not the right person to act in it.
