There were some nervous moments for the makers of 'Vicky Donor' when they presented before Censor board their film which deals with the 'sensitive topic' of sperm donation. While many around producer John Abraham were of the belief that such a taboo subject would be granted with an 'A' certificate, it turned out to be a win-win situation for all involved when a 'U/A' certificate came their way.
"We were always walking a thin line", confesses John, "The subject of sperm donation of sensitive but we wanted to present it in a fun way without offending anyone. Thanks to Shoojit Sircar (the film's director), we never faltered or got carried away in our endeavour. Shoojit is one of the finest directors that India has and he has presented the story quite beautifully. Censor board too agreed with that and found it to be non-offensive. They pronto gave us a 'U/A' certificate and we are happy with that. I am glad that now even kids can go and watch the film with their parents.
No wonder, John is happy with the fact that as a producer he has managed to present a film which, as per him, would make a difference to the world in its own small way. He also reiterates the fact that just like what 'Dostana' did to bring out homosexuality from the closet, even 'Vicky Donor' would manage to do the same, especially since it has been granted a 'U/A' certificate and hence can be seen by a large segment of audience.
"At the end of the day just like 'Dostana', even 'Vicky Donor' is a commercial film. What is common between both the films is that they are enjoying a credible platform for themselves. Things like surrogacy, sperm donation etc. are the kind that are waiting to be addressed at a wider platform and liberal attitude taken by the Censors has further helped the cause", says John.
'Vicky Donor' releases all over this Friday.
