Vettaiyan Review
'Vettaiyan-The Hunter' is a gripping cop drama exploring the clash between two contrasting ideologies of justice. On one side stands a trigger-happy encounter specialist, who believes in dispensing instant justice, while on the other is the head of the Human Rights Commission, a staunch advocate for due process and the rule of law. This clash of principles forms the core of the film's narrative, driving the story forward with suspense and moral complexity.
Story
Kanyakumari SP Ajith (Rajinikanth), a renowned encounter specialist with a 100% success rate, embodies the philosophy of swift justice, leaving no room for error. His methods, however, clash with DGP Satyadev (Amitabh Bachchan), the head of the Human Rights Commission, who staunchly believes in due process and the principle of "Justice Delayed is Justice Delivered." Satyadev views encounters as "Justice Hurried and Justice Buried."
Under pressure from Chennai DGP Srinivas (Rao Ramesh), SP Ajith is tasked with solving the brutal rape and murder of government teacher Saranya (Dushara Vijayan). With a 48-hour deadline looming, Ajith assembles a team consisting of SP Harish Kumar (Kishore), ASP Roopa Kiran (Dushara Vijayan), and Patrick (Fahadh Faasil). As they delve deeper into the investigation, a series of shocking and sensational developments unfold, revealing intricate connections to Nazeema (Rohini), Thara (Manju Warrier), and NAT academy chairman Natraj (Rana). The film unravels a complex web of secrets, betrayals, and hidden motives, pushing the boundaries of justice and morality.
Analysis
Director T.J. Gnanavel, known for his powerful message-driven films like 'Jai Bheem', aimed to deliver a impactful social commentary with 'Vettaiyan - The Hunter', leveraging the star power of Superstar Rajinikanth. While the film successfully showcases Rajinikanth's charisma and elevates his scenes, the role itself offers little new ground for the actor, relying heavily on his trademark style and mannerisms.
The film's strengths lie in its stellar cast, with Amitabh Bachchan's commanding presence adding gravitas and the scenes featuring both him and Rajinikanth being particularly captivating. Fahadh Faasil brings his signature comedic timing to the role, while Rana effectively portrays a menacing character with limited screen time. Dushara Vijayan delivers an emotionally charged performance, while Manju Warrier and Ritika Singh impress in their respective roles. The supporting cast, including Rohini, Rao Ramesh, Ramesh Thilak, Kishore, and Abhirami, deliver competent performances.
The narrative begins with an intriguing premise surrounding encounter killings and human rights, but quickly falls into predictable tropes. The first half heavily revolves around Rajinikanth, with other characters orbiting his presence. While the second half aims for seriousness, it suffers from logical inconsistencies in the investigation. The film touches upon relevant themes like NEET exams and education in government schools, but fails to achieve genuine emotional resonance. The dialogues, though thought-provoking and impactful at times, can also feel preachy, testing the patience of viewers. The second half drags, further detracting from the overall experience.
Despite the strong points, "Vettaiyan - The Hunter" ultimately falls short of its potential. Gnanavel's focus on elevating Rajinikanth's heroism overshadows the exploration of other characters and the film's social commentary. While the film boasts an engaging premise, the lack of originality in the screenplay and the predictable narrative detract from its overall impact.
Anirudh Ravichander's music, while enjoyable for fans, lacks novelty. The background score, while effective in certain moments, fails to elevate the scenes to their full potential. Kathir.SR's cinematography is visually appealing, showcasing vibrant colors. Philomin Raj's editing, however, could have been more impactful, particularly in the second half. The production values are grand, adding to the film's visual appeal.
Overall, "Vettaiyan - The Hunter" offers a decent one-time watch for fans of Rajinikanth and those interested in social commentary. The film's strengths lie in its stellar cast, captivating dialogues, and the exploration of relevant societal issues. However, a more compelling narrative, stronger character development, and a faster pace would have elevated the film to a greater level.
Verdict
TJ.Gnanavel with Vettaiyan The Hunter turned Super Star Rajinikanth as a powerful messenger to the society. Little fine-tuning of the script would have added more firepower.
