Brother of iconic composer Ilayaraja and father of filmmaker Venkat Prabhu, Gangai Amaran has made significant contributions to Tamil cinema. Known for his versatility, he has penned lyrics for numerous hits composed by Ilayaraja and has also collaborated with musical legends like M. S. Viswanathan, S. P. Balasubramaniam, and Yuvan Shankar Raja. His compositions in Mauna Geethangal and Vaazhvey Maayam remain evergreen classics.
As a filmmaker, Gangai Amaran delivered memorable movies like Kozhi Koovudhu and the blockbuster Karakattakaran, which set benchmarks in Tamil cinema. Recently, he has been active as an actor, appearing in films like Chennai 28 directed by his son Venkat Prabhu.
While shooting for a new project near Manamadurai, he experienced breathing difficulties, reportedly due to the cold weather, and was immediately taken to the hospital. His sons Venkat Prabhu and Premji rushed to be by his side.
