'Varudu Kaavalenu' is playing in theatres currently. Starring Naga Shaurya and Ritu Varma, the rom-com is directed by Lakshmi Sowjanya. Produced by Sithara Entertainments, the film has generated a lot of buzz post its release.
In this interview, dialogue-writer Ganesh Ravuri talks about working on the movie, why it has clicked, his experience of teaming up with producer China Babu, and more.
Excerpts:
The core structure of the story was written by director Lakshmi Sowjany and co-writer Sharath. After I came on board, I wrote the additional screenplay as well as the dialogue. Usually, the views of a new writer are not accepted easily. But they were open to my suggestions.
I worked on the basic structure to rev up some characters, like the ones played by Saptagiri, Vennela Kishore, Himaja and others. Their comedy is situational. It was a challenge. The track involving Saptagiri has received a huge response.
I was a film critic before and I didn't know that producer China Babu garu follows my reviews. Before 'Varudu Kaavalenu', I worked on a couple of movies from behind the scenes. I worked on 'Lovely' as well as 'Solo Brathuke So Better'.
Trivikram garu, my favourite writer, watched the movie before its theatrical release and made a couple of small changes. It's a sign of our movie being very good that he had only small suggestions and not major ones. Many writers make an effort to ape his style. Although I am a big fan of his dialogues, I haven't imitated him in writing dialogues for 'VK'. His dialogues are brief and effective. They are not verbose. That's what I have tried in 'Varudu Kaavalenu'.
The lazy character and his contrast (played by Saptagiri) in the movie are entertaining. We see such quirky characters in the movies of the likes of Sreenu Vaitla garu. The story of 'VK' is about the lead pair talking their heart out. It has to be delayed. And if their eventual interaction has to be delayed, we have to introduce new characters so that the audience are engaged with something.
The film starts halfway. The eight-year gap between the college episode and the present is not touched in the film anywhere. The middle portions are not shown at all. That's why the present is so detailed in the first half to help the audience understand Ritu Varma's character better.
I didn't think from the point of view of film critics while working on the movie. My aim was to ensure that the audience love the film. I knew that 'Varudu Kaavalenu' has no element that critics would deem fit to analyze. At the same time, I knew the subject is good enough for them not to write it off. Characters like the one played by Murali Sharma garu have been lauded for presenting the perspective of the females.
I travelled with the film right from the time I got on board. I was there on set during the shoot. The director saw me as a member of her team and not a mere dialogue writer.
The love story is clean, in that the lead characters don't have any sort of physical contact. Bhumi is a great lover. And her mindset is endearing in her college days.
I have got a few ideas in mind. I have spent a lot of energy and time on 'Varudu Kaavalenu'. I am now relieved. I am now engaged in working on the ideas I have in mind.
