DJ Vasanth, who rose to fame with the film 'Sudigadu', is the grandson of popular veteran music director Satyam. He worked as an assistant under many noted composers before making his debut with 'Madata Kaja'. Besides 'Speedunnodu' this year, he is busy working for Dynamic Lady Director B Jaya's 'Vaisakam', which is produced by BA Raju on RJ Cinemas banner. Apart from these, he is also busy with six more projects that are at various stages of production. Excerpts of an interview with the rising music director:
For how long have you been in the industry and who is your inspiration?
I have completed 16 years in the industry. My grandfather is my inspiration behind entering films. I have worked as an assistant and composed as an assistant for many big composers like Sri garu, Mani Sharma garu, Harris Jayaraj garu, and RP Patnaik garu. I have also written lyrics for few songs in the beginning.
What did you learn for Satyam garu?
My biggest learning is that there are no big films and small films, and all films are the same before the release and need to be given cent percent effort. Musically, I loved the Dhol beats in grandfather`s song. He used to say even melody songs needs to have a beat and I try to incorporate this in my songs.
Who are you more comfortable with, small or big producers?
A producer is a producer, there are no big and small ones. Whatever may be the budget, I believe that good output can be given without compromising on the quality. I maintain that quality irrespective of the budget of the film. Whoever may be the producer, my efforts are going to be same.
Melody or beat – which one do you attach more importance to?
Neither, as I give more importance to the story and the director. Whatever the story and the director demand, I try my best to deliver without compromising on quality. I don't give excuses pointing at the budget. I don`t try to force myself onto them; I only deliver to the maximum ability what the director asks for.
How is 'Vaisakam shaping up?
All the songs have come out well. I could give such good songs only due to the freedom given by Jaya madam. Visually, the songs are fabulous. The songs have to be shot with as much love as they were composed. Credit goes to producer BA Raju garu for the support. For any film, it's the producer who comes first and then everyone else. 'Vaisakam' was started as a small film and today it has become a very big project. This film will be a great help to my career.
All the films of director Jaya have been musical hits so far. What special care has been taken to make sure the album of 'Vaisakam' becomes a hit?
All the previous films of Jaya madam like 'Premalo Pavani Kalyan', 'Chantigadu' and the last release 'Lovely' were big musical successes. I feel blessed to have been chosen as her movie's music director. She told me that the songs have come out better when compared with her previous films.
Which song of 'Vaisakam', according to you, will be the biggest highlight?
All the songs in the film are good. However, since melody is special to me, I will pick the two beautiful melodies in the film. They have been shot extremely well too. I have watched three of the songs and the picturization is awesome. You are going to see locations not seen previously in any movie.
'7/G Brindavan Colony', whose too was set in an apartment backdrop, was a super hit musically. Can we expect 'Vaisakam' too to become a big hit, music-wise?
I would not like to compare one music album with another. One can find this better and someone else can find that better; it's purely subjective. But what I can guarantee is that I have put all my efforts to give my best shot. Except for the same backdrop, there is no similarity between the two films. 'Vaisakam' is a different film altogether and comes with a nice message. I am sure that Jaya madam will give everyone associated with the film a big success.
What are your next projects?
I am composing music for Manchu Manoj`s next film, which is directed by Sathya. I have been roped in to compose music for a E Sattibabu movie produced by KK Radha Mohan garu. I have had nice equations with Allari Naresh garu. It was with his movie that I made a debut. My biggest success was again with his film 'Sudigadu'. I couldn`t work with him again after that, but now I have got a chance. I have been roped in for his new film which is a remake of Malayalam film 'Oru Vadakkan Selfie', to be directed by Anish Krishna. Three more films are in the pipeline.
