Today is the birthday of renowned lyricist, poet and writer Vairamuthu. Even from a very young age, he was passionate towards Tamil and his love for the language and literature was further moulded by the Dravidian movement and inspiring personalities like Bharathiar, Bharathidasan, Periyar EVe Ramasamy, Annadurai and Kalaignar Karunanidhi.
Being a prominent speaker during his under graduation days, Vairamuthu had completed a masters in Tamil literature, and impressed by his works, Director Bhrathiraja brought him to films with his movie Nizhalgal in 1980, and the song he penned was the evergreen classic "Ponmalai Pozhuthu".Vairamuthu has delivered superhit songs with lyrical beauty, in collaboration with directors like Bhrathiraja, Maniratnam and K Balachander, as well as music directors like Isaignani Ilaiyaraja and AR Rahman, and all of his songs with the said creators are sure to stand the test of time.
In a career spanning close to 40 years, he has penned more than 7500 songs and poems, besides his contribution to literature has also been amazing, and he has penned 37 books, with some of the notable among them being Kallikaatu Ithihaasam, Karuvachi Kaviyam and Moondram Ulagapor. The most celebrated lyricist of Tamil Cinema has won 7 National awards, 10 Filmfare awards, and multiple other awards and recognition. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award for Kallikatu Ithihasam and had been awarded Padmashri and Padma Bhushan by the Indian government.
With his ability to adapt to the trend and changing times, Vairamuthu has been a lyricist who is very much relevant even now, inspiring younger generation and being pivotal in the arrival of new poets, and is still giving a tough fight to the current generation lyricists and poets which includes his son Madhan Karky himself.
