"About 5,800 people out of tens of millions who have been vaccinated against coronavirus have become infected anyway," CNN has quoted America's top health agency as saying. So far, 66 million people have been vaccinated in the US. Of these, 5800 have got infected with the coronavirus.
While the number may look disappointing in the absence of context, it's actually good news when tempered with the larger picture. Analyzing the data, Eric Topol wrote, "What is the chance of getting covid after getting vaccinated in the US? 0.008% (among 66 million fully vaccinated). 0.00056% to be hospitalized (7% of these infections). And of dying from covid? 0.00001% (7 in 66 million vaccinees)."
Patrick Fanelli wrote that the vaccine is proving to be more effective than thought. Proposing an alternative headline, he wrote, "Vaccine thought to be 98% effective turns out to be 99.993% effective.”
American recently stalled the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because six individuals have developed blood clots. This was out of more than six million people taking the vaccine.
