In a horrifying incident, a man from Uttar Pradesh ripped open his pregnant wife's stomach in order to find out the gender of his unborn baby. A father of five daughters, he desperately wanted a son, according to the police.

The man, identified as Pannalal, allegedly got home drunk Saturday night and got into a verbal altercation with his wife, who is 7 months pregnant. During the course of their argument, apparently regarding the unborn baby's gender, he took a sharp-edged object and slit his wife's stomach open. "The man, identified as Pannalal, has slit the stomach of his wife, 35, with a sharp-edged weapon in the Nekpur locality under the Civil Lines police station area," a senior police officer reportedly stated. "Pannalal wanted a son and committed the crime to know if it was male or female foetus," the woman's family alleged.

The victim was immediately rushed to a hospital in Bareilly where she is currently in a serious condition. An FIR has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC while investigation is currently underway.
