In a shocking incident reported from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, a woman and her daughter set themselves ablaze outside the Chief Minister's secretariat allegedly over police inaction in a land dispute case.
The woman and her daughter hail from Amethi and the incident happened at around at around 5.40 pm on Friday in the state capital's high-security zone as it houses the assembly as well as the Lok Bhawan - the office of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. "The mother-daughter duo sustained burn injuries and were admitted to the civil hospital where their condition was said to be critical. The police personnel posted there swung into action as they saw the women engulfed in flames and rescued them. They had some dispute in the Jamo area in Amethi. They had come here but didn't approach anyone and instead tried to immolate themselves in front of Lok Bhawan," a police officer reportedly stated.
Accusing the state government of not addressing the concerns of the poor, Former chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav stated, "There is sad news in front of Lok Bhavan in Lucknow that two women have committed self-immolation due to no action against the bullies. The SP had built the Lok Bhavan so that the general public can go there for redressal of their grievances without discrimination, but there is no hearing for the poor in this BJP government." Investigation of the matter is currently underway.
