An adult same-sex couple living together in the Baghpat area of Uttar Pradesh was forcibly separated and harassed by their family members.
The two adult women, who have been in a relationship for a while, were living together in a home in the Baraut area in Baghpat. According to reports, the two women wished to work together in the academic field but their respective families had been against their union since the beginning of their relationship. Earlier this week, the family members of the women barged into their home and physically harassed them when they refused to leave the house. The CCTV footage of the incident recently surfaced online and went viral across social media. The couple has now sought protection from the police. "We had also given a written complaint to the police to provide us protection. But before they could, Priya's (name changed) relatives came here and thrashed me publicly and even tore my clothes. And they took her away," one of the women reportedly said.
Two years ago, the Supreme Court of India decriminalised homosexuality. On September 6, 2018, in a unanimous verdict, the court ruled that homosexuality is no longer a crime in India, and that the members of LGBTQ community have the same sexual rights as any other citizen.
