It was not a good day for World Number 1 Tennis player Novak Djokovic as his opponent Daniil Medvedev registered a win in straight sets in the final match of US Open, sealing a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory and denying Djokovic an opportunity to create history at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Novak Djokovic was all set to achieve the calendar Grand Slam, having won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon already, with just one match away at the US Open to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors in one season. Djokovic, who was unable to convert a break chance in the initial sets, was visibly unhappy as he was seen smashing his racket thrice against the court in frustration during the second set.

However, Medvedev became the first Russian man to win a Grand Slam title after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin. Apologizing to Djokovic and his fans during the post-match interview, the World Number 2 said, "Sorry for you fans and Novak because we all know what he was going for. What you have accomplished in your career... for me, you are the greatest tennis player in history."

Unable to cope with the pressure, Djokovic became overwhelmed by emotions during the match and broke down and cried into his towel. He earned massive support from the New York crowd who tried their best to cheer up the 20-time Grand Slam champion. Speaking about how he felt moments after the defeat, Djokovic said, "Relief. I was glad it was over. The buildup for this tournament and everything that mentally, emotionally I had to deal with throughout the tournament in the last couple of weeks was just a lot. It was a lot to handle."

He further added, "I was just glad that finally the run is over. At the same time I felt sadness, disappointment, and also gratitude for the crowd and for that special moment that they created for me on the court. So many different emotions. Part of me is very sad. It's a tough one to swallow, this loss, considering everything that was on the line. But on the other hand I felt something I never felt in my life here in New York. The crowd made me very special. They pleasantly surprised me."
