US Open champion and World Number 5 men's singles tennis player Dominic Thiem has pulled out of the 2021 Wimbledon with a wrist injury. Thiem is among one of the major players, including Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, defending champion Simona Halep, and Milos Raonic, to withdraw from the tournament.
Dominic Thiem retired during the opening set of his first match at the Mallorca Open grass-court tuneup tournament this week following his wrist injury. The player would apparently have to wear a wrist splint for five weeks and will be skipping the three upcoming tournaments including Wimbledon in order to recover. In his statement, Thiem said, I'm going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible. They've informed me that I might be out for several weeks, but I will do my best to be back on court soon. I'm really sorry to be pulling out of the upcoming three tournaments I had in my calendar: Wimbledon, Hamburg and Gstaad.
Wimbledon was cancelled last year, the first time since World War 2, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament is scheduled to be held from June 28 to July 11. Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep are the defending men's singles and women's singles champions, respectively, from 2019.
