Gen Qassem Soleimani has been killed by the US forces on Donald Trump's orders. The head of Iran's elite Quds Force stood liquidated by an airstrike at Baghdad's international airport on Friday.

Iran has seen this as "rogue adventurism". The US-Iran tensions will now see a further escalation. The Middle East, some experts believe, will have to brace up for more chaos.

Condemning the assassination, US Senator Elizabeth Warren today said, "Soleimani was a murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans. But this reckless move escalates the situation with Iran and increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict. Our priority must be to avoid another costly war."

Yes, there is talk of a possible war.

Adam Schiff writes, "Soleimani was responsible for unthinkable violence and the world is better off without him. But the US Congress didn’t authorize and American people don’t want a war with Iran. All steps must now be taken to protect our forces against the almost inevitable escalation and increased risk."

Bestselling author Andy McCarthy defends Trump's decision. "Soleimani killed hundreds of Americans and had designs on killing countless more. His loss is a major blow to Iran. Acting in our defense is never certain, but the good guys won today — and Trump’s approach is better than paying off the bad guys or pretending they’re not so bad," he tweets out.

As things stand, a big escalation is expected. Senior journalist Richard Engel writes, "Iranians will consider the US killing Soleimani an act of war. A proxy war could erupt. Likely in Iraq, but also a danger in Lebanon and Israel."
