Senior officials in the Biden administration advise Israeli authorities to avoid ground invasions and minimize bombings that could harm people in the Gaza Strip. President Biden has supported the Israelites' defence against Hamas, but he has also limited indiscriminate deaths, especially in densely populated Gaza. The government privately urges Israel to follow international military rules and act more morally than Hamas. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin conveyed this in Israel talks.

U.S. officials worry that a large Gaza civilian death toll will draw attention away from Hamas and toward Israel's assault, harming Israel's international position. Despite this sensitive context, Israel has given Palestinian residents in Gaza advance warning to reduce civilian harm.

The State Department memo advised officials to avoid "de-escalation/ceasefire" and "restoring calm," which would be mindful of Israel's ambitions of defeating Hamas. The Biden administration's terminology is limited during this unexpected conflict. Israeli leaders vow to strike Hamas with considerable force but must avoid collateral damage to avoid international criticism.

Former national security officer Ben Rhodes discussed the long-term effects of current policies. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed Palestinian civilian protection. Being a close friend and providing supplies and support gave the U.S. influence over Israel's military actions. President Biden may have to have an honest chat with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about prudence during this difficult time, additional human lives be damned.

The Biden administration aims to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and safeguard Israel's reputation in such a volatile environment.
