Director Shankar made the pathbreaking 'Indian' in 1996 starring Kamal Haasan in dual roles which became an all-time commercial and critical blockbuster hit.  Urmila Matondkar played one of the heroines and is remembered for the song "Akadanu naaga udai pottaal".  The Bollywood beauty joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of the then president Rahul Gandhi just before the parliamentary elections.

The congress fielded Urmila in the North Mumbai constituency but she faced defeat and blamed the party workers for not rendering enough cooperation.  Today Urmila handed over her resignation from the National party and stated that she could not tolerate the infighting in the party.  The actress was in the party only for five months and is expected to announce her next move soon.
