The Yogi Adityanath government has been trolled for 'spending' a whopping Rs 133 Cr on putting up Diwali 'diyas' in the holy town of Ayodhya most recently. The event attracted national attention because 5.51 lakh diyas were lighted on the special occasion. It was a Guinness Book moment for India. However, because of the alleged spend, the event became controversial in nature.
Guess what, the government didn't splurge Rs 133 Cr in the first place. It was Rs 1.33 Cr. A typo committed by a news report trigged misconception and all the brouhaha. There arose a hue and cry against the BJP government for "wasting" public money. Some people event noted that lesser money has been spent on providing free transport to women in Delhi.
Fact-checker Pratik Sinha today wrote, "The UP government granted 'state fair' status to 'Deepotsav', an event in Ayodhya where 5.51 lakh diyas were lighted. The cabinet approved an estimated budget of Rs 1.33 crore which was misreported as Rs 133 crore by several media outlets."
