Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, revealed that Kyiv possessed photographic evidence indicating that Russian drones had struck Romanian territory during an overnight air attack on Ukrainian port facilities along the Danube River. The attack targeted the Ukrainian city of Izmail, located on the border with Romania, during a three-hour drone siege initiated by Russia. Some of these drones fell and detonated on Romanian soil, a member of NATO.
Ukraine's air force successfully downed 23 out of 32 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched from Russia and occupied Crimea during the assault. This incident followed Russian strikes on another Danube River port, Reni, which Romania's Foreign Minister, Luminita Odobescu, denounced as a barbaric attack against civilian targets.
Oleg Nikolenko, an official from Ukraine, corroborated the drone incursion into Romanian territory, stating, According to Ukraine's state border guard service, last night, during a massive Russian attack near the port of Izmail, Russian 'Shaheds' fell and detonated on the territory of Romania. This incident underscores the threat posed by Russia's missile attacks not only to Ukraine's security but also to the neighboring countries, including NATO member states.
However, Romania's Defense Ministry refuted these claims, denying any Russian drones had fallen on its territory. They asserted that Russia's actions had not generated any direct military threats to Romania's national territory or waters.
