Ukrainian women who filmed themselves dancing on soldiers’ graves over Ukraine’s Independence Day, Aug. 24th, have been detained. The footage removed later and shared initially via Instagram by the user ‘vl_lindermann showed them in various dresses at several sites over two days this month. Later in August, they also took photos beside signs marking their victims’ final resting places. In an apology after the release sparked outrage across Ukraine as well as abroad, the account holder said they had gone to visit their father’s grave. Authorities quickly located them anyway.
The Kiev police quickly tracked the two women down and brought them in for questioning; having committed an indecent act, they were accused. These two sisters came to the cemetery to remember their brothers who fought and died there—by very disrespectfully choosing such a way of doing so. Photos of them dressed as they appeared on that video were later released by the police.
The video has caused outrage among netizens, with many expressing their strong disapproval of the disrespectful act. One commented on how there was no respect, while others highlighted the need for more awareness and intelligence. Some suggested that they should be given social service tasks to help them understand what could happen due to such acts.
This incident brings about an aspect of respecting the sacrifices made by soldiers and sensitivity in commemorating such occasions.
