It is now commonly known that stalking is a punishable offense. Yet, it is portrayed in movies casually. The distress of a woman who was stalked by a man for 18 months can be seen in her statement: “This whole experience has completely shattered my nerves, I have gone from being a confident young woman to constantly feeling scared and on edge. I have no desire to socialise or meet new people, which has really taken its toll and ruined the university experience I had always envisioned. I cannot understand why this male became so obsessed with me. It is so unfair and completely undeserved. I just want him to realise what he has done and to know that he cannot do this to me or anyone else. I now want to move on knowing that he is locked away and cannot harm or hurt anyone else like he has done to me."

Below is an account of events.

After stalking a woman from the UK for 18 months, an Indian citizen pleaded guilty in the Isleworth Crown Court and was sentenced to 29 months of jail. In November 2017, Rohit Sharma, aged 28, had been served by the victim in a shop in Wembley, London. Sharma returned with his father the same day asking the victim who was in her 20s, to marry him. Despite the victim having changed jobs, Sharma tracked down her office, obtained her phone number and bombarded her with messages on social media and text.

In February 2018, following a report by the victim, Sharma was given a harassment warning. He continued his harassment and stalking, however. He used to call the woman up to 40 times a day from around 15 different numbers and watched her while she was at work.

In July 2018, he was charged with harassment but came out on bail. His harassment did not stop. He was then wanted by the police after missing a court hearing in November. The victim moved houses and quit her job to evade Sharma. This led to him trying to find her by contacting those who knew her.

On April 16, 2019, Sharma was arrested by the police. He was sentenced to 22 months in jail for stalking, six months for harassment and one month due to failure to appear in court. He is also being considered for deportation back to India after his sentence is finished.
