Uber has become a popular cab-hailing service worldwide. Though there have protests against the service from local taxi drivers, the public sentiment for the company seems to be always positive. In an effort to infuse technology, Uber had come out with the idea of driver-less cabs. However, one such car, a Volvo SUV ended up killing a pedestrian in San Francisco.
49 year old Elaine Herzberg was the victim who was walking a bicycle well outside the lines of the crosswalk when the car(at 40 mph) hit her according to officials. Uber’s Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi took to his social page to express his condolences and assured that the company is working with the local law enforcement for investigation purposes.
While the general notion around the incident is that the incident might be a deterrent for self driving autonomous vehicle technology, many opine that the event might be singular with lots of scope for improvement. It is also worth mentioning here that this is the first time a person has been killed with regards to an autonomous driving vehicle. In addition to this, Uber has also stopped all testing of such vehicles in the area of incidence temporarily.
