Two wives of former AIADMK MLA V. Paneerselvam were imprisoned for two years (each) in a case involving misappropriation of assets. The High Court of Madras has thus confirmed the punishment awarded by a lower Court.
Panneerselvam was an AIADMK MLA for five years from 1991-96 and represented Theni District’s Bodinayakkanoor in the State Legislative Assembly. He was accused of amassing wealth to the tune of Rs.21 lakhs at that time by misusing his official position of power.
Trial in the case culminated in Panneerselvam’s wives Janaki and Dhanabakkiyam getting imprisonment of two years each while Panneerselkvam, got 3 years’ prison term. After the 2007 verdict, the trio had moved the High Court of Madras for review of the verdict. In the meantime, Panneerselvam passed away in 2012.
The High Court of Madras has now confirmed the judgment of the lower Court which means the wives of the late Panneerselvam would have to go to prison. They have been given two weeks’ time to surrender themselves before the Court.
