Two children were found locked up and were allegedly tortured and denied food by their parents in Mampad near Nilambur town in Malappuram district of Kerala. The shocking incident happened at a house where migrant labourers were staying. The children, identified as a 10-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, were locked up by their father and stepmother and let them starve for several days.
After the locals got to know about the children's plight, they informed the panchayat authorities about the incident. The authorities broke open the door and found the children lying in a very weak condition. They rushed the starving kids to the hospital. The children are said to be abused by their parents, which was evident from the beat marks found on their bodies. Eyewitnesses say that the kids couldn't even open their eyes.
Reportedly, the kids' biological mother passed away a few months ago. The father hails from Viruthambalan in Tamil Nadu and he has been living with another woman for a while now. The couple is said to have been torturing the kids, who were often locked up in a room. The children have been admitted to the Nilambur district hospital and are getting treated for fatigue.
The father and stepmother of the two children were arrested on Wednesday. A case has been registered against the father and stepmother under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, among other charges.
