Twitter ban coming?: Union Minister promotes Koo

On Tuesday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal became the first high-profile Indian government functionary to promote the social networking app Koo on Twitter. This comes amidst the talk that the Indian government is miffed with Twitter for providing a platform to several alleged anti-India propagandists.

Here is what Goyal wrote: "I am now on Koo. Connect with me on this Indian micro-blogging platform for real-time, exciting and exclusive updates. Let us exchange our thoughts and ideas on Koo."

India last year banned scores of Chinese apps, including TikTok. With the Union Minister tweeting about Koo, there are murmurs that it's a sign that the Modi government will eventually ban Twitter within a year or so. Social media celeb Gappistan Radio feels that a similar tweet from Modi would mean that Twitter India is done. Columnist Abhinav Prakash believes that the Twitter East India Company should be given a similar treatment on the lines of what was meted out to Chinese apps last year.

A Twitter-verified journalist named Naveen Kapoor wondered, "Netas and ministries joining Koo. Twitter ka bye bye hone wala kya?"

Journalist Bhuvan Bagga, reacting to Goyal's tweet, wrote, "Connected to the ongoing Twitter and Indian government situation or not, I have now seen too many notifications in the last few days of people, especially those close to New Delhi, joining this Indian Twitter alternative -- Koo."

Should we be prepared for a ban on Twitter?
