US President Donald Trump was shifted to the Walter Reed medical centre on Friday after testing positive for COVID-19, along with his wife Melania Trump. Numerous tweets hoping for Trump's death started surfacing soon after. Twitter has now mentioned in a statement that such tweets hoping for Trump's death are in violation of the policies that Twitter follows.
Claiming that the policy has been applicable to all people since April, and not just Trump, a spokesperson reportedly said, "Tweets that wish or hope for death, serious bodily harm or fatal disease against anyone are not allowed and will need to be removed." People from marginalized communities questioned Twitter's move to announce the policy now, especially since they had been receiving death threats almost on a daily basis. "The decision to suddenly enforce this policy underscores that centralizing content moderation decisions with Big Tech monopolies will always protect the powerful and silence the marginalized," a Trans woman reportedly mentioned. Additionally, a Facebook spokesperson also said that posts wishing Trump's death - including comments on the president's pages, and posts that tag him - will be taken down from the social network. Trump informed yesterday, "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER."
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany later said the president "remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day." She added, "Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days. President Trump appreciates the outpouring of support for both he and the First Lady."
