In a series of noteworthy gestures today, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam leader Vijay stirred conversation by extending greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the morning, followed almost immediately by a tribute to social reformer Periyar. The rapid succession of messages has prompted political observers to question whether the popular actor-turned-politician is signalling a deeper political alignment.
In his tribute to Periyar, Vijay stated, “Periyar awakened the Tamil people against caste dominance, religious oppression, and superstition. His principle of ‘All beings are born equal’ shattered the chains of social slavery. He inspired people to fight with rational thinking. On his birth anniversary, we pledge to uphold his ideals of women’s rights, equality, and social justice."
The symbolic nature of his tribute didn’t stop at words. Vijay made a personal visit to Periyar’s memorial to offer his respects by garlanding the statue. A video capturing this act of reverence quickly went viral on social media, further fueling speculation about Vijay's political direction. His recent tribute to Perarignar Anna on his birth anniversary, followed by today's homage to Periyar, has raised eyebrows.
Political analysts are now wondering if the star is embracing the principles of Dravidian politics. Adding to the intrigue is his notable silence during Hindu festivals like Vinayagar Chaturthi, with some critics suggesting that Vijay’s avoidance of these festivals further cements his shift toward a Dravidian ideology. Observers argue that Vijay made a strategic move by aligning with Dravidian ideologies by recognising their dominance in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
