The T Subbarami Reddy Foundation's National Yeah Chopra National Memorial Award for the year has gone to Asha Bhonsle, the legendary singer. The award carries Rs 10 lakhs in cash prize along with a 'swarna kankanam'.
Conferring the award, TSR says, "Asha Bhosle ji is best known as a playback singer in Hindi cinema. She has done playback singing for over a thousand Bollywood movies."
The prolific Bhosle long ago found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and, more than that, the Padma Vibhushan (2008).
The jury consists of Boney Kapoor, Madhu Bhandarkar, Honey Irani and Padmini Kolhapure as its members. Apparently, much brainstorming went into deciding upon the winner. "We are happy to confer the award on the great singer. Earlier Shri Lata Mangeshkar, Shri Amitabh Bachchan, Shri Rekha, and Shri Shahrukh Khan were conferred the award," TSR says.
The award will be presented to Bhosle on February 16 at an event to be held in Mumbai. The Governor of Maharastra, C.H. Vidyasagar Rao and Asha's sister Lata Mangeshkar, will be honoring her with the award.
The likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Amir Khan, Sridevi, Jayaprada and certain dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion.
