As was expected, Donald Trump has suspended H-1B, L-1 and other temporary work permits with the ostensible aim of protecting job opportunities of Americans. With unemployment looming large in the US in the wake of Covid-19, the President of USA has made this contentious move. The Potus said that it's the government's moral duty to create an immigration system that protects national interests.
To be effective till December 31, the new order has come as a shocker for lakhs of aspiring Indians, who now can't go to the US for jobs.
The tech industry in the US reportedly opines that that protectionist move is going to hurt innovation.
The anti-immigration stance is already drawing criticism from the tech industry. Google CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted, "Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today. Disappointed by today’s proclamation - we’ll continue to stand with immigrants and work to expand opportunity for all."
Even political opposition is in order. US Senator Lindsey Graham wrote, "Legal immigration is a positive for the American economy, and visa programs allowing American companies to secure qualified, legal labor throughout the world have benefitted economic growth in the United States. Before coronavirus, legal immigration and programs like these played an important role in helping President Trump create the strongest economy in generations. I have little doubt that programs like these would help him build it again."
