Donald Trump, the former U.S. president turned potential 2024 Republican nominee, said on Tuesday that he expects to face charges related to last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol. Special counsel Jack Smith is already prosecuting Trump for mishandling top-secret government documents after his presidency. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated he had received a letter from Smith stating he was the target of the January 6 Grand Jury investigation. He said he was given just four days to appear before the grand jury, and this could lead to an arrest as well as an indictment.

The smoldering investigation into what many refer to as part of Special Prosecutor Eric Olson’s zero-sum game plan over the January 6 attempted attacks has been referred to as a "Trump power play" by media outlets due to its increasingly shadowy nature. Though details regarding what charges may be levied against Trump are unclear, he branded the Department of Justice as becoming a "weapon" for the Democratic Party with regards to his political career.

More than 1,000 people have been rounded up for participation in the Capitol attack. Some 350 people face charges of assaulting law enforcement officers or resisting arrest. Trump's defense attorneys asked for a trial date after the November 2024 White House vote, but Judge Aileen Cannon is skeptical about delaying it that long. In addition, Georgia prosecutors are trying to figure out if Trump illegally tried to turn back the 2020 election outcome in the state.

That possibility was explored as Trump faces other legal trouble, including the hush money case in New York and an investigation over his election-eve activities with Ukraine. That said, Trump remains a headline act for the Republican Party. Others, like Nikki Haley, vie for the 2024 nomination.
