After a 12-hour-long strenuous effort by rescue personnel, a wild elephant that fell into a deep unused well in Thiruvambady was rescued on Saturday. The videos of the rescue operation were also viral online. Much to the disappointment of many, the elephant died due to dehydration on Sunday morning,
It was the laborers who were engaged in establishing a fence around the forest who first spotted the elephant inside the well on December 31. Being a difficult spot to reach, it was a major challenge for the forest official to perform the rescue operations.
The team had to walk 4 kilometers to reach the well by constructing a pathway. After a marathon effort, the rescuers brought the elephant to safety.
After the elephant was saved, it tried to attack the people who had gathered there due to its traumatic experience. Soon, the elephant collapsed near the same place. The forest department officials stated that it had no serious injuries and that it was dehydration that resulted in fatigue. The officials provided food and water to the elephant and also took care of the jumbo but it died within a few hours.
