Traffic fines are not for revenue: Gadkari

Ever since the fines for traffic offences were steeply raised by the Centre, there has been a view that the idea is to increase revenue by imposing hefty penalities. Reacting to the criticism, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, today said that revenue maximization is not the government's aim.
"This isn't a revenue income scheme. Are you not worried about deaths of 1,50,000 people per year due to road accidents?" Gadkari asked.
With several States, including BJP-ruled ones such as Gujarat, reducing the quantum of fines, Gadkari said, "If the state governments want to reduce this, vehicle users won't have the fear of law".
