Top Cops of Kollywood
The flavor of the season seems to be Cop stories in Kollywood as top stars Suriya, Arvind Swamy, Jayam Ravi, Raghava Lawrence and later on Thala Ajith are set to storm the theaters in Kakhi. Here we take a look at some of the top cops of Kollywood who are etched in the memory of Tamil fans.
Sivaji Ganesan
Its been more than four decades since the Nadigar Thilagam donned the role of the immortal S.P. Chowdhary and he is still the text book reference for cops in Kollywood. In later years Sivaji also roared as a cop in 'Vellai Roja', 'Viduthalai' and 'Puthiya Vaanam' as well.
MGR
The Makkal Thilagam with his perfect physique made the role of the cop his own as Nathan in 'En Kadamai'.
Vijayakanth
In the late eighties and nineties, it was Captain Vijayakanth who was the most respected cop in Tamil cinema with a string of movies such as 'Oomai Vizhigal', 'Pulan Visaranai' and ' Sethupathi IPS'.
Sathyaraj
Known for his roles filled with social satire with a coating of sarcasm, Sathyaraj found huge success with his role as 'Walter Vettrivel'. He later repeated his success in 'Amaidhi Padai', 'Malabar Police','Veera Padhakkam' and the upcoming 'Motta Siva Ketta Siva'.
Arjun
Action King Arjun made his career by playing different types of cops and his roles in 'Sevagan', 'Jai Hind' and 'Mangatha' are amongst the best in Tamil cinema.
Sarath Kumar
With his sculpted and fit body, Sarath Kumar is one of the few actors who naturally fits into the Khakis and he has done so in films like 'Gambeeram', 'Ragasiya Police' and 'Chennaiyil Oru Naal' to name a few.

The perfectionist Kamal took great pains to get his looks right for cop roles which started with 'Kaaki Sattai' and continued in 'Soora Samharam', 'Apoorva Sagodharargal', 'Vikram' and recently the tough cop in 'Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu' and the comical Balram Naidu in 'Dasavatharam'.

The Ilayathalapathy brought his swag and style to cop roles be it the undercover Tamil in 'Pokkiri' or the corrupt Shakthi in 'Jilla'. His biggest hit 'Theri' saw him don the kakhi again to great effect.
Ajith
Thala's charisma made the villainous cop Vinayak Mahadev one of the most likeable and then gave another shade as the brooding undercover cop in 'Yennai Arindhaal'.
Simbu
Many would have doubted if Simbu can carry a cop, but he proved his detractors wrong by succeeding twice in 'Osthi' and 'Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada'
Jayam Ravi
Like Simbu the softspoken Jayam Ravi would not be an obvious choice for a cop but his brother gave him an author backed role in 'Thani Oruvan' which won many hearts and he is continuing the avatar in his just released 'Bogan' as well.

The angry young man of Kollywood was a stylish cop in the urban thriller 'Sathyam' and a local one in the true life based 'Paayum Puli'.
