Top Cops of Kollywood

The flavor of the season seems to be Cop stories in Kollywood as top stars Suriya, Arvind Swamy, Jayam Ravi, Raghava Lawrence and later on Thala Ajith are set to storm the theaters in Kakhi. Here we take a look at some of the top cops of Kollywood who are etched in the memory of Tamil fans.

Sivaji Ganesan

Its been more than four decades since the Nadigar Thilagam donned the role of the immortal S.P. Chowdhary and he is still the text book reference for cops in Kollywood. In later years Sivaji also roared as a cop in 'Vellai Roja', 'Viduthalai' and 'Puthiya Vaanam' as well.

MGR

The Makkal Thilagam with his perfect physique made the role of the cop his own as Nathan in 'En Kadamai'.

Vijayakanth

In the late eighties and nineties, it was Captain Vijayakanth who was the most respected cop in Tamil cinema with a string of movies such as 'Oomai Vizhigal', 'Pulan Visaranai' and ' Sethupathi IPS'.

Sathyaraj

Known for his roles filled with social satire with a coating of sarcasm, Sathyaraj found huge success with his role as 'Walter Vettrivel'. He later repeated his success in 'Amaidhi Padai', 'Malabar Police','Veera Padhakkam' and the upcoming 'Motta Siva Ketta Siva'.

Arjun

Action King Arjun made his career by playing different types of cops and his roles in 'Sevagan', 'Jai Hind' and 'Mangatha' are amongst the best in Tamil cinema.

Sarath Kumar

With his sculpted and fit body, Sarath Kumar is one of the few actors who naturally fits into the Khakis and he has done so in films like 'Gambeeram', 'Ragasiya Police' and 'Chennaiyil Oru Naal' to name a few.

Rajinikanth

Superstar Rajinikanth rocked as the straightforward Alex Pandian in 'Moondru Mugam' which is considered to be one of his best performances in his distinguished career. He also donned kakhi in his own inimitable style in 'Un Kannil Neer Vazhindhal', 'Kodi Parakkudhu' and 'Pandian',

Kamal Haasan

The perfectionist Kamal took great pains to get his looks right for cop roles which started with 'Kaaki Sattai' and continued in 'Soora Samharam', 'Apoorva Sagodharargal', 'Vikram' and recently the tough cop in 'Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu' and the comical Balram Naidu in 'Dasavatharam'.

Vijay

The Ilayathalapathy brought his swag and style to cop roles be it the undercover Tamil in 'Pokkiri' or the corrupt Shakthi in 'Jilla'. His biggest hit 'Theri' saw him don the kakhi again to great effect.

Ajith

Thala's charisma made the villainous cop Vinayak Mahadev one of the most likeable and then gave another shade as the brooding undercover cop in 'Yennai Arindhaal'.

Simbu

Many would have doubted if Simbu can carry a cop, but he proved his detractors wrong by succeeding twice in 'Osthi' and 'Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada'

Jayam Ravi

Like Simbu the softspoken Jayam Ravi would not be an obvious choice for a cop but his brother gave him an author backed role in 'Thani Oruvan' which won many hearts and he is continuing the avatar in his just released 'Bogan' as well.

Vishal

The angry young man of Kollywood was a stylish cop in the urban thriller 'Sathyam' and a local one in the true life based 'Paayum Puli'.

Karthi

The consummate star- actor Karthi gave a riveting performance as Rathnavel Pandian in 'Siruthai' making the role memorable and he is gearing up to repeat the magic in his upcoming 'Theeran Adhigaram Ondru'.

Sivakarthikeyan

Very early in his career, Sivakarthikeyan got the role of a cop in 'Kaaki Sattai' which he carried off with relative ease in one of his biggest hits to date

Vijay Sethupathi

This monster of an actor went under the skin of a never before seen cop in Tamil cinema with 'Sethupathi' in which it is sheer delight watching him switch faces from a loving family man to a terrifying cop and back again.

Raghava Lawrence

The dance choreographer turned director turned hero after his super successful horror series 'Kanchana' is trying out the kakhi for the first time in 'Motta Siva Ketta Siva' which will hit the screens some time in the next few weeks.

Suriya

Never before in Kollywood a hero has starred in a cop movie series excepting Suriya who first made his mark with 'Kaaka Kaaka' and later transformed into Durai Singam for the 'Singam' series the just released third part 'Si3' has become a blockbuster as well.

Vikram

Actor par excellence Vikram handled the out and out commercial cop 'Saamy' to such perfection that this role automatically finds its place amongst the top cops in the history of Tamil cinema.
