Top 10 Grossers of 2015 - Special Redcarpet Analysis by Sreedhar Pillai
In this new Redcarpet show, noted Film journalist Sreedhar Pillai lists the Top Ten Grossers and the ten profitable films of Kollywood in the year 2015 and analyses the reasons for their success. The Top 10 list is based on gross collections (inclusive of Entertainment tax, theatrical share and distributors share) made in Tamil Nadu theatricals as we don't really have an authentic numbers for worldwide collections even today.
10. Anegan
A very good grosser for Dhanush. Highest every grossing film. But it was also very costly film for Dhanush. The K.V.Anand directorial was billed at around Rs.30 crores.
9. Kakki Sattai
The film took a super opening all over Tamil Nadu and can be classified as one of the big grosser of the year.
8. Komban
The film did exceptionally well in B and C center and can be classified as a Hit film. Taking the cost of the film into consideration, it is definitely one of Karthi's biggest grosser.
7.Kaaka Muttai
The film is on the list, based on the Return on Investment. The film cost around Rs.2-2.5 crores at the most for the producers (Dhanush and Vetrimaran). But the way it was marketed by Fox Star took it to overseas market. It is the highest grosser in Hong Kong. It collected about Rs.90 lakhs in Hong Kong. Similarly the film did exceptionally well in so many foreign stations.
6. Naanum Rowdy Dhaan
The film directed by Vignesh Sivan, did exceptionally well with hardly any publicity. The film opened so well, the story the script, the way Nayanthara was showcased in the film helped it to generate an awesome opening and the music of Anirudh made it a big hit.
5. I
Its one of the biggest grosser of the year. But since the investment is huge it's at number 5. 'I' was released worldwide in more than 2,000 screens and it helped to generate that huge opening. The Shankar brand along with the bigness of the film got that big opening.
4. Thani Oruvan
It's been the comeback year for Jayam Ravi. His 'Thani Oruvan' features as number 4 in our list. It's a phenomenal hit. Director Mohan Raja. Jayam Ravi, Arvind Swamy and Nayanthara as a team clicked. And the film's collections have been phenomenal worldwide.
3. Baahubali
One of the biggest grosser in Indian cinema. It did exceptionally well in Tamil Nadu too because of its rich content, graphics, VFX work and the way the characters were presented in the film. 'Baahubali' had predominantly Telugu star cast of Prabhas, Rana Daggupati, Anushka and Tamannah. As far as Tamil cinema was concerned one of the pivotal roles in the film was done by Sathyaraj and Ramya Krishnan and that worked with audience across the state.
2. Vedalam
It's Ajith's biggest hit till date. The film made phenomenal business in Tamil Nadu. It took a bumper opening, had a beautiful Diwali date and the fans that went berserk and Siva-Ajith combination clicked again. The collections of 'Vedalam' would have been bigger if there were no Chennai rains. It affected the film's collection to a certain extent in its key areas that is Chennai city and Chengalpet.
1. Kanchana 2
In our list, the number 1 grosser of the year is Raghava Lawrence's 'Kanchana 2'. It has done extraordinary business across Tamil Nadu and its dubbed version in Telugu is also a super duper hit in Andhra Pradesh. Both the films combined together-the trade says- have done over Rs.100 crores. 'Kanchana 2' released during summer 2015 and it also helped since the schools and colleges were closed. It did phenomenal business in April-May. The way, Sir Thenandal Films marketed it in around 400 screens and simultaneous release with the Telugu version worked wonders at the box-office.
