When Disney first announced 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', 'Tomorrowland' director Brad Bird was the studio's first choice to direct the mega franchise. Having already given massive successes for Disney-Pixar flick in 'The Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille', it wasn't a major surprise that the studio had in their minds the prolific director for the 'Star Wars' job.

In a recent interview for his 'Tomorrowland', the director explained why he had to let go the mega project.

Brad explained, 'It absolutely was [a tough decision], but there was no way to do that film without junking this film, and we had already gotten George Clooney involved and I was excited about this film. I understand they had to get [The Force Awakens] made, and they would`ve had to push it in order for me to do it.'

He further added, unlike 'Tomorrowland', 'The Force Awakens' was "going to get made whether [he did] it or not".

He finally said, 'I thought there's a chance that 'Tomorrowland' won't get made, simply because it loses its momentum. A movie is a weird thing. It's not a tangible thing. You have this wispy cloud that you're trying to solidify and I thought that it deserved to be made. You know, 'Star Wars' is a very robust thing right now and it's going to be fine.'

When Brad was further prodded on the subject of the upcoming 'Star Wars' Anthology movies, he declined to get on board with the conversation stating, "Right now I`m writing 'Incredibles 2', so I`ve got my hands full!". However, he did go on to say that he still had a lot of passion for the beloved sci-fi franchise.

It must be noted that at the time, Bird's move to go ahead with an independent and original work as 'Tomorrowland' was lauded by many. However, with the movie at the moment getting a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is it possible he could have made the wrong decision? Whatever the outcome of that decision, the sooner the world has 'The Incredibles 2', the better.
