Fondly addressed as Lalettan by Kerala people, Mohanlal is undoubtedly and unarguably one of the best actors to have emerged in Indian cinema and a proud torchbearer of South Indian cinema in the national and international arena. Lal made his debut with the Malayalam film 'Thiranottam' in 1978. The film however released after 25 years due to various issues. His first film to hit the screens happened to be 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal;' that released in 1980.

Mohanlal has acted in over 320 films his mother tongue Malayalam which has a equal share of arthouse and commercial films. He has also acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi language films. He is equally popular among Tamil audience for his adept portrayal of the role inspired by former Chief Minister MGR in director Mani Ratnam's classi 'Iruvar'. His other popular films in Tamil include 'Sirachalai' and the more recent 'Jilla' which saw him share screen space with Ilayathalapathy Vijay.

The man who has elevated himself to the position of a cultural icon of Kerala has won four National awards (two for best actor) and eight Filmfare awards among many others. He has been conferred with the Padmashri the fourth highest Civilian honour of the Indian Government.
