It is rumoured strongly in the powers of corridor in Chennai that the Edapadi K. Palaniswami-led AIADMK Govt. in the State is mulling the option of filing a 'contempt of Court' petition against the BJP-led Centre on the issue relating to the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
Delivering a verdict on 16th February while disposing off the appeals filed by the Sates of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Karnataka against the 2007 verdict of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to set up within 6 weeks (by 29th March) a Cauvery Management Board to supervise the Cauvery water-sharing arrangement between the concerned States.
The deadline of six weeks expired yesterday and with no announcement from the Centre forthcoming, the State Cabinet met yesterday morning under the chairmanship of the chief-minister and discussed the next course of action to ensure justice to lakhs of farmers in Delta Districts of the State who depend on Cauvery water for their livelihood.
Deputy chief-minister O. Panneerselvam, TN attorney-general Vijayanarayanan and others attended the meeting which reportedly decided to file on Saturday (31st March) a 'contempt of Court' petition against the Centre. The State is likely to request the Supreme Court to treat it as an 'emergency petition' so that it can be taken for interrogation on Monday (02nd April) itself.,
