Govt. of Tamil Nadu filed the much-awaited ‘contempt of Court’ petition against the BJP-led Centre for not constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

The 6-week deadline stipulated by the Supreme Court in its February 16 verdict to set up the Cauvery Management Board expired last Thursday (29th March), thus giving anxious moments to the people of Tamil Nadu in general and the farming community in particular as the setting up of the Board alone could supervise the water-sharing arrangement between the States of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.

In response to people’s demands, the AIADMK-led Govt. in Tamil Nadu filed a ‘contempt of Court’ petition against the Centre with the Supreme Court on Saturday.  The petition states that Union Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha and Union Water Resources Secretary U.P. Singh as those responsible for not implementing the final verdict of the Supreme Court in setting up the CMB within the stipulated time.

Tamil Nadu PWD secretary Prabhakar and Cauvery Technical Committee president R. Subramanian have filed the petition on behalf of the State which might be taken up as early as on Monday (02nd April) as an emergency petition by the apex Court. A decision in this regard, however, might be taken by the Court only after a few weeks after it seeks and gets explanation from the Centre to its notice.
