In an effort to increase the number of students, a government school in Tamil Nadu has decided to offer gold and cash for joining. One gram gold and Rs.5000 in cash will be given to the first 10 students who enroll.

The school which started with 165 students experienced a lowering in their numbers as the population of the village reduced. So in order to avert a situation where the school might be closed, the headmaster decided to go through with offering gold and cash.

The school is in Konarpalayam, near Annur in Coimbatore. Reportedly, the interest amongthe villagers to enroll theri childrenin the government school wavered in hopes of getting an admit in an English medium school.

When the school student count dropped down to ten, a businessmanby the name of Shekar came forward to sponsor the gold and cash to help increase the count. After consulting with the education department, the school went ahead with this decision.
