Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown that followed, people are trying to venture out of homes to get essentials, food, water and other necessary items wearing masks. While the masks completely cover the face, it becomes difficult for people with speech/ hearing issues to communicate.
In an attempt to help them, the Tamil Nadu government has planned to distribute 81,000 transparent masks for hearing and speech impaired persons, besides also distributing them to their parents, trainers, teachers and others so that it'll help them read lips and facilitate communication.
It was announced by TN government on Saturday that as normal masks completely cover the face making it impossible for hearing and speech impaired persons to read lips, understand the message and communicate, the Tamil Nadu Commissionerate for Welfare of Persons with Disabilities is set to work on a project to distribute 81,000 transparent masks to 13,500 persons with disabilities, along with their families, classmates and teachers.
